Australian juniors aim to fly high

Thirty of Australia's most talented juniors gathered in Canberra for the 2017 Junior Elite Training Squad. The group of players (mainly in the 8 to 14 age group) received coaching from a very strong coaching team, as well as playing a training tournament, before finishing with a simul against GM Ian Rogers.

The training tournament was won by FM Daniel Gong (visiting from New Zealand) with 6/6. Dillon Hathiramani and Aiden Odenthal tied for second on 4.5. In the Grandmaster Simul, GM Ian Rogers won 26 games, drew 3 and only lost to 12 year old Ruofan Xu.

The yearly training session was sponsored by Geraldine Johns-Putra, herself a former strong Australian junior player. The coaching team consisted of GM Ian Rogers, GM Darryl Johansen, GM Zong Yuan Zhao, GM Max Illingworth, IM Andras Toth and WIM Emma Guo. The event was organised by WFM Alana Chibnall on behalf of the Australian Junior Chess League, with assistance of WFM Cathy Rogers.
