GM Max Illingworth wins NSW Open on countback

GM Max Illingworth has won the 2017 New South Wales Open, on countback over IM Gary Lane and IM Andrew Brown. The three players finished on 6/7, with 5 wins and 2 draws. Tied for 4th place were GM Zong Yuan Zhao, IM Anton Smirnov and FM Brandon Clarke (ENG). 

The key round of the tournament was round 6 where Illingworth defeated Zhao, and Lane defeated young Australian star Anton Smirnov. The final round saw Illingworth and Lane agree to a draw, allowing Brown to catch them with a win over FM Jason Hu.

The Minor event (Under 1600) was won by Jaganda Balin (IND) on 6.5/7. In second place was Frank Jia on 6, with Mike Canfell, Eva Ge and Michael Tracey sharing third place.

The annual tournament attracted 142 players across 2 sections this year. In the Open there were 9 separate countries represented, including a squad of 13 players from Singapore. The tournament offered over $8000 in prizes, including a $1000 first prize in the Minor section.
