2017 NSW Open begins with 142 players

The 2017 NSW Open has begun with a field of 142 players. This annual event is held in Sydney Australia over the Queens Birthday Long Weekend, and offers over $8000 in prizes. Top seed is GM Zong Yuan Zhao (AUS), followed by GM Max Illingworth (AUS). While the field is mainly from Australia, this years tournament sees a squad of ambitious Singaporean juniors also taking part. 

The tournament is being held at the Russian Club, in the Sydney suburb of Strathfield. Organised by the NSW Chess Association, the tournament also offers $3000 in prize money for players rated under 1600. The tournament runs over 3 days, finishing on the 12th of June.
