Yeoh Continues to Win in Zone 3.3 Zonal

Malaysia’s Yeoh Li Tian beat IM Oliver Dimakiling of the Philippines to widen his solo lead with 5.5 points after six rounds of the Zone 3.3 Zonal Championship at the Tagaytay International Convention Center in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Yeoh turned back the Torre Attack of the Filipino IM and the Malaysian gained a pawn in the minor piece endgame. Dimakiling blundered on the 48th move and resigned as he lost his Queen.

Yeoh faces Megaranto of Indonesia in the sixth round, his third GM opponent. The 18-year-old Malaysian has completed his International Master norms and is gunning for the grandmaster title.

In second slot with 4.5 points each are top seed GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam and Singapore FM Liu Xiangyi. Megaranto and FM Pitra Andyka of Indonesia and GM Rogelio Barcenilla of the Philippoines are tied with 4 points apiece.

In the women’s division WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam crushed the Nimzo Indian defense of top seed IM Irene Sukandar of Indonesia in 30 moves to maintain her solo lead with 5 points.

WIM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam is alone in second slot with 4.5 points followed by compatriot Luong Phuon Hanh and WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An of Vietnam  and Filipina WIM Janelle Mae Frayna.
