GM Max Illingworth Leads 2017 Australian OpenMonday, January 9, 2017
After eight rounds of a scheduled eleven, Australian grandmaster Max Illingworth remains the sole leader of the 2017 Australian Open Championship.
Illingworth is on 7 points (6 wins and 2 draws).
He won a very important game in the sixth round against Uzbekistan International Master Temur Kuybokarov and since then has not looked back.
In round nine Illingworth will face his biggest test when he meets top-seeded Egyptian Grandmaster Ahmad Adly who has won his last three games.
There is still a big group of 15 players which have a chance of winning the AUD 4,000 first prize.
Round nine will also see a Belarus family affair with Grandmaster Sergey Kasparov playing his wife International Woman Master Tatiana Kasparova and the question is he will be a gentleman?
